Point One Zero audited how a global apparel and footwear company's ten brands appear in AI shopping answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. The company assumed its well-known brands would be recommended by default. The audit showed otherwise and traced the largest problem to a security setting rather than to marketing.
Shoppers increasingly ask AI assistants what to buy, and each answer names only a few brands. The company had no measure of how its brands appeared in those answers, and commercial teams assumed brand fame would carry over. Nobody had checked whether AI crawlers could reach the brand websites at all.
We scored all ten brands against our 70-point AI readability checklist and ran branded and category shopping questions across the major answer engines. We recorded which brands were mentioned, which sources were cited and where descriptions were wrong. Findings were split into fixes for infrastructure teams and fixes for commercial teams.
The portfolio averaged 26.4 out of 70, and no brand scored above 39. Infrastructure teams were blocking AI crawlers at the CDN and firewall without marketing's knowledge, and a leading outdoor brand lost category questions to review sites. Leadership received brand-by-brand scores and a prioritized fix plan for each team.
Each brand scored on crawler access, structure, facts, schema and proof.
Branded and category questions run across the major AI assistants.
AI crawlers were being denied at the CDN and firewall level.
Infrastructure and commercial teams each received their own prioritized list.
The biggest reason the brands were missing from AI answers was a security rule, not the content.
